  42. I've just bought a Yaesu FT-530 and, since it's my first radio, I hace a
  43. couple of questions that I'm hoping someone can answer for me:

  45. 1. Since I had the mods done I can transmit in frequencies I'm not
  46. supposed to transmit in (e.g. Police frequencies). Is there any way I can
  47. turn transmit off on those frequencies alone? I've tried to do this by
  48. storing the PTT disable in the memory along with the frequency but it
  49. does not seem to be a setting that is set separately for each memory.
  50.  
  51. 2. I'm concerned about how quickly the battery runs down. I got a little
  52. slip with the unit that says that the voltage display is .2 to .8 volts
  53. LOWER than the actual battery voltage. In the instruction manual it says
  54. that when the voltage hits 5.5 volts the battery pack should be
  55. recharged. The low battery indicator comes on when the display shows 5.5
  56. volts even though (I presume) the actual voltage is a little higher. When
  57. transmitting, the battery voltage can dip significantly and cause the
  58. battery low indicator to flash. Is this the time to recharge or should I
  59. wait until the battery is low when receiving?
  60.  
  61. 3. I'm using all the battery saving functions and I'm wondering if they
  62. really do make a difference.
  63.  
  64. 4. Are there any cheap alternatives to buying Yaesu batteries/chargers
  65. for the FT-530?
  66.  
  67. 5. What kind of antenna can I replace the standard one with to improve my
  68. transmit (instead of increasing wattage)?
  69.  
  70. If anyone can answer any of these questions I would be most grateful. If
  71. anyone has questions about the FT-530 I would be glad to try to answer
  72. them.

  91. You might start off with the battery guidebook available at Radio Shack.
  92.  
  93. You can also get data from the manufacturers as well, but this is more work
  94. for most people.  The amp hour rating isn't terribly useful with alkaline
  95. cells--quite a bit of dependence on how you take the power out of the cell.
  96.  
  97. As a rough guideline, if you aren't taking too much out at once, you can
  98. probably get 4 or 5 times the cycle lifetime (except you just get one
  99. cycle out of the non-rechargeable ones) out of an alkaline as compared with
  100. a Nicad.  On the other hand, you typically can only get a tenth or so of 
  101. the maximum current--Nicads are really good at high current application.
  102.  
  103. It is important to have a radio designed for alkalines--if you want to 
  104. make best use of them. Radios like the FT-290 and IC-202 used 9 alkaline
  105. cells--you start around 13.5 volts and you toss the cells when they drop
  106. below 8 or 9 volts.  If your transceiver needs 11 or 12 volts minimum 
  107. alkalines probably aren't worthwhile.  Fortunately, most HTs accomodate
  108. such a wide voltage swing as well.

  226. I have a 535D and had an r5000. For ham band listening the r5000 was great,
  227. but IMHO the NRD is significantly better.

  229. I would go for the non "D" model 535 first and then the 525 second.

  231. If you want filters buy the OEM ones as the Japan Radio ones don't seem to
  232. have a great slope factor.

  306. On another topic, has anyone ever succeeded in controlling the 742A by
  307. remote control from another radio?  I tried following the instructions in
  308. from Kenwood (which I got when someone posted them here on news) but it
  309. didn't respond to the commands.  It works OK using the remote control
  310. instructions in the owners manual, but those only let you remote control it
  311. from the microphone (not very useful).

  343. Im rebuilding the phaseing delay lines for my KLM amateur satellite yagis and 
  344. need to located a source to acquire about ten feet of RG-302 75 ohms and ten 
  345. feet of RG-303 50 ohms, teflon coax cable.
  346.  
  347. RG-302 & RG-303 both have teflon dielectric and a silvered copper shield, both 
  348. have inner conductors of silver-plated copper-plated steel. They are designed 
  349. for high-temperature operation. I suspect they were selected by the antenna 
  350. manufacturer because of low temperature coefficients. I don't want to use Radio 
  351. Shack 75 ohm TV cable.

  357. KLM sells the complete phaseing kit replacements for $49 each, however I feel
